Cutting Energy Use While Expanding Usable Space
Artpace is a nonprofit residency program that supports Texas, national, and international artists. The space and exhibitions are free and open to the public. In 2025, Artpace partnered with Big Sun Solar to integrate solar panels into their shaded rooftop structure leveraging SA Climate Ready Community Incentives funding.
The impact of this initiative is substantial. According to their website, the solar rooftop offsets more than half of their annual energy use and reduces its yearly carbon footprint by over 75 metric tons. This project delivers a dual benefit: it creates a weather-protected space while generating clean energy and boosting the building’s efficiency. This effort has drastically lowered long-term utility costs—for instance, the organization’s February electric bill plummeted from $2,200 in 2025 to just $300 in 2026.
